Meet Joy

Joy Rika Miyatake

Graduated from Be the Change Yoga in Irvine as a Yoga Therapist in 2020. She has been teaching yoga since 2008 and practicing since 2002 — one thing she has learned is that yoga is more than poses, yoga is lifestyle alignment. Joy’s undergraduate work at Hampshire College and graduate work at University of Hawaiʻi was focused on understanding Eastern spirituality through the lens of Western psychology. She is known for applying yoga solutions for modern problems. Her main focus is on releasing trauma from the body with movement. She has served adaptive sports communities, veterans with PTSD and Cambodian genocide survivors helping to release generational trauma of war-torn communities both domestically and abroad.

Joy has gained deep interest in inter-generational trauma after looking into her own family history of being interned in America in World War II. Her grandfather was the photographer, Toyo Miyatake, who secretly brought a camera to document Manzanar internment camp. The question of inter-generational trauma and how to resolve it became an interest of hers since she began her studies in 2002. She honors her family legacy as a 4th generation photographer by keeping her family photography studio open in Gardena, CA.

"Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward impressive health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga."

Joy’s additional passions include free-diving, travel and underwater photography, which she merges due to being the multi-passionate human that she is. She truly loves the challenge of gaining mastery over breath, as well as mind-body connection which she intensively studied throughout her yoga therapy training, as well as studying at Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarnath, Varanasi, India.

Joy currently offers virtual 1:1 yoga therapy, group yoga therapy, group coursework and transformational retreats. Rather than focusing on yoga methods and practices, Joy as a yoga therapist fundamentally focuses on her clients’ needs. She also has many additional programs and retreat opportunities that you truly don’t want to miss out on.
